LAPAROSCOPIC SURGERY IN ZAMBOANGA SIBUGAY: A LEAP OF MODERNIZATION IN MISSIONS

Uncategorized

The Maharlika Charity Foundation has a longstanding reputation for its surgical missionary work, recognized by the Surgical Commission of the Philippine College of Surgeons. While many groups engage in similar missions, what sets this initiative apart is its emphasis on education, training, and the integration of modern techniques like laparoscopic procedures, marking a significant leap in modernization for surgical care in the region.

Dr. Bobby Bandolon and his colorectal team at SPMC recently conducted 11 laparoscopic cholecystectomies, diagnosing a patient with gallstones in the common bile duct and treating another with perforated peptic ulcer disease referred to Zamboanga City Medical Center. These specialized procedures not only save lives but also pave the way for advanced surgical care in the community.

Additionally, the trauma team led by Dr. Ben Valdez, Dr. Antonio Feliciano, and Dr. Bernabe Mendoza performed cheiloplasty for 39 patients, while the SPMC trauma team conducted 19 thyroidectomies. The dental team also contributed by handling approximately 85 dental cases during the mission.

This comprehensive approach to healthcare, encompassing a range of specialized procedures and services, not only improves the quality of care provided to patients but also enhances the skills and expertise of healthcare professionals in the region. Through collaboration, training, and the adoption of modern techniques, the mission aims to save lives one at a time and promote better surgical care in ZAMBOANGA Sibugay.
